About MenuCal
Note: MenuCal is not currently being developed. I dont't think at this point it will ever be.
MenuCal is a simple menu item for Mac OSX that displays a small calendar and information about iCal items for the given date. It is currently in it's infancy and while it is usable, it's probably not enjoyable to use. The early releases are available as a preview and to gather feedback, so YMMV. Currently it functions well enough, but the GUI is rough, it is missing some features and it probably uses a lot more memory than it should.
MenuCal was written after a previous product by the name of CalendarClock dissapeared. I was a big fan of that program, and was dissapointed to learn that someone had purchased it and started charging $20 for it. That would not have been so bad, except that the replacement product was, in my opinion, not as good as it's previously free predecessor. MenuCal was created to provide an alternative to the CalendarClock replacement.
Current Features
- Displays accurate mini Calendar
- Displays iCal data in drawer
- Can be configured to disable iCal scanning, display as a docked or normal window, and stay on top or close when window loses focus
- Supports memos for each calendar day
- It should be more stable (hopefully) and the worst of the memory leaks are fixed
- It is now dock aware, in theory
- auto away, to hide window after x seconds
- selectable colors for the calendar control
- more efficient memory usage
- new iCal parser, with support for repeating events
- growl notifications are supported
Upcoming Features/TODO
- GUI refinement (feedback requested)
- Animate window to slide down/up
- application icon would be nice
- ability to select position in menu? currently it (hopefully) sits just to
the left of the OS X clock
- Option to be able to directly add 'memo' items to the calendar rather than using iCal
- I'm toying with the idea of entourage support, but it may be prohibitively complicated...
- Option to have drawer below window
- Check the readme :)
- Your suggestions
Known Issues
- MenuCal can potentially use a large amount of memory if you have a lot
of data in iCal
- It may crash randomly. It's pretty stable for me, but you never know.
- I have no idea if it will show up at the proper screen location, or even display at all. If it doesn't,
let me know.
- Some minor memory leaks still
- Preferences require a restart

[...] it's probably not enjoyable to use.
Wrong...
If for no reason other than that it enables me to have the date right next to the time and all the way to the right of my menu bar (and it's the only date app I've ever examined that does so) MenuCal is a wonderfully useful app.
Even as a one-trick-pony MenuCal is a joy to have on my deuced Mac(hina).
Thanks for having developed it!
